We all know that “abs are made in the kitchen.” As much as it sucks, you cannot out train a bad diet. My #1 rule when it comes to nutrition is to figure out what works for you. Over the past 5 years, I have pretty much done it all in the dieting world. My goal was to feed my body for performance. I have tried Zone, Intermittent Fasting, Carb Backloading, IIFYM (If it fits your macros), RP, Paleo, you name it, I’ve done it.
Your goals will determine your nutrition regiment. While I was training in 2104, I used Joy from Fitness Baddies. She gave me a breakdown of macros to support my activities while maintaining a lean body. It worked very well for me. I struggled with achieving my daily caloric goal but this was the closest I’ve come. This year, I used RP with the sole purpose of losing weight while maintaining my milk supply. I worked 1 on 1 with Dr. Jen Case for this reason alone. It worked but I eventually got tired of dieting so hard.
Now, since I’m not training as much, I’m on the “look good naked” train. Eating clean, borderline paleo is what works for me and my body. I focus on quality food but I also eat dessert whenever I want. Think pink and purple drink at Starbucks. I don’t like the feeling of deprivation so I make sure to indulge, within reason, while keeping my goals in mind!

I want to pass on healthy eating habits to my kids and I think we’re on the right path. They love most vegetables and the ones they don’t love, I hide them in their food! Holllllaaa spaghetti squash. Below are The McKenzie household’s top 5 meals. They’re simple, fast and super hard to mess up. Win!
My 5 Go To Recipes (Kid Approved)
This is a fan favorite. It’s easy to stick the squash in the oven and continue on with your day. I make my meat sauce by browning some 93/7 ground beef and adding canned tomato sauce. Ain’t nobody got time to make sauce from scratch.
- Fried Cauliflower “Rice” and Sautéed chicken
Trader Joes sells cauliflower rice. I will pay for the convenience of not having to chop up a head of cauliflower (while possibly severing a finger) and stick it in a food processor. Makayla asked me, “Are you sure this is rice?” Yes, I’m sure 4 year-old. Now be quiet and eat your food!
Throw some diced up chicken in a pan with Flavor God seasoning, because that sh*t is good on everything, and you have a meal.
This was a takeaway from my time doing RP. Protein pancakes that the entire family goes ape-sh*t over. Getting the 4 year-old to eat protein takes an act of congress. She would live off cucumbers and sugar-free gum if I let her.
Another RP takeaway. I am a huge fan of meals where I don’t have to do anything but put stuff in a crockpot and walk away. The kids can’t eat it (thank goodness for organic turkey hotdogs) but the husband can and as long as he’s happy, I can continue to shop.
- Chunky Monkey Breakfast Shake from Juli Bauer’s Paleo Cookbook
This with some coffee and I’m ready to rule the world, as long as I can keep the spawn from taking it. There’s nothing better than a chocolate shake for breakfast and not feeling guilty about it.
So there you have it. We believe in exposing the babies to nutrition at a young age. They all know what protein, carbs and fats are and that a calorie is energy. Give these recipes a try and let me know how you like them! P.S. I am still breastfeeding and am below pre pregnancy weight with no impact to my milk supply.
