Holy hell. We are 2 days into the new school year and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t tired already. New schedules, new activities, home projects, renovations on the brain and not to mention this tiny little creature that loves to destroy things. I don’t function well with no routine and right now, I feel like a chicken running around with its head cut off but we are finding our groove. As my coach told me, thrive or die and in my effort to thrive, I’ve come up with a few things to help me stay on course.
1) Write It Down
I’m pretty sure I have the worst 20-something year old memory around. Like literally the worst. It feels like baby brain never got the memo that I’m not pregnant anymore. If it’s not written down, either on paper or in my “Do it (Tomorrow)” app, it’s not getting done and it’s not because I don’t want to but because I will forget. I distinctly remember making fun of my mom for her schedule book. This is payback.
2) Only One Major Project a Week
The school year is a marathon not a sprint and I’m notorious for constantly coming up with shit to do. Not only is it bad for my “budget” but it’s bad for my psyche. Rushing around trying to get things done when I have 32 more weeks in the school year is unnecessary. So I’m putting my foot down. I will only tackle one major project a week. This week was turing the old classroom into a craft room for the spawn. Check!
3) Read with Maddox
My boy loves books and I means LOVES! No matter what I’m doing, if he crawls to me with a book, I will stop whatever it is and read to him. His favorite book right now is “8 Silly monkeys” and he will have me read it 3-4 times in a row but it’s completely worth it. He sits still to read and if you know Maddox, he’s doesn’t sit still for anything else! I don’t want to lose that. So I will read with my boy.
4) Go to F$&K to Sleep (Said in my Samuel L. Jackson voice)
I’m such a night owl. I’d rather stay up until 1am watching HGTV with my husband but it’s going to be a long year if I keep this up. I need to go the f&*k to sleep or I’m going to be sucking fumes in a couple weeks. Netflix and mind numbing TV is going to have to wait for the weekends. These bags under my eyes aren’t cute and I can only use so much concealer.
5) Prep Lunches on the Weekend
My girls love to take their lunches because I pack some
bomb ass food boring healthy food but they love fresh fruit and veggies so prepping on the weekend would be such a help. It’s simple but can go a long way to making mornings less hectic. I also stumbled upon this awesome post from another mom for more lunch ideas! Moms helping moms. I love it.
6) Take Things in Stride
The first week is always a learning curve and finding our groove is not always easy. Thank goodness counties are smart enough to make week 1 short by starting it after labor day. The short week is a God sent. I’ve come to the conclusion that things will fall through the cracks and even though it’s not ideal, it’s not the end of the world.
