The Dulles 5K on the Runway has come and gone and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised with the results. No I’m not talking about myself but rather the 9 year-old. She finished her run in just over 36 minutes, averaging an 11:30 minute mile. Until that day, every mile we ran was right around 13:30. Out of 808 women, she finished 354th which is better than half. Holy crap. She might have hated miles 2 and 3 but she did it! No matter how you choose to get your sweat on, testing your fitness is so important. If she doesn’t see progress, she has zero desire to continue. We signed up for another race.
Set Small Goals
Setting small goals throughout the year keeps me moving in the right direction. That’s why I sign up for things like the Army 10-miler and the CFWS RP Challenge, to keep myself “in the game” mentally otherwise I’d eat my boredom and shop myself into debt.
During the 5K, I would pick a person, try to catch them and eventually pass them. Then I’d pick another person, catch them and pass them. When I hit the 3 mile mark, I hauled ass to the finish because it was over and I didn’t die. Playing little mind games with myself going when I want to stop. Running alone, I was never able to break a 9 minute mile because I had no reason to. Running is dumb but during the 5K, I ran it in 26 minutes after starting in the back with the 12/13 minute milers. Not blazing but not crappy either.
Testing Your Fitness
The main reason I did Crossfit competitions was to test my fitness. When my goal was to snatch 200 lbs, I did everything I needed to achieve that goal. When my goal was to clean 108kg, I ended pregnant and had to stop squatting [it’s ok, because I really hate squatting]. If I don’t have a goal, I become stagnant and bored to tears.
If you’re looking for a way to test your fitness, an online qualifier such as the Wodapalooza Online Qualifier (hint hint), is a great way. You can do it from the comfort of you own gym but it’s like you’re competing with the world. The first workout is released today! I may or may not have signed up. I have zero desire to be “Elite” but I at least want to not suck at things 🙂
Happy Hump Day Y’all!
