I found Crossfit at the end of 2008. Ava was 2. Since then, I have had 2 more crossfit kids and they all have grown up in Crossfit gyms. They’ve attended many competitions with gross, sweaty people and loud, angry music. This means that on any given day, the girls can hear expletives galore, especially if Wendell is around. Missed lifts, poor performances, PMS, they’ve been around it all. Plus grandma is a former marine so the words “f&%k” and “$h!t” are in our daily vocabulary. [non-judgement zone]
I don’t censor myself around my crossfit kids because I teach them what they can and cannot say. We have “adult words” and children’s words just like we have sometimes food and all-the-times food. Nothing in our home is forbidden. Some people may not agree but I believe that once you have forbidden things, whether it’s food, words, or actions, that provokes an opposite reaction. It’s like that big red button that you’re told not to push. You obviously have to push it. Or at least I do. Tell me not to eat ice cream everyday and I’m going to ignore you and do what I want! Back to my point.
The oldest girl has been around potty mouths the longest and I have never heard her say an adult word. I asked her to say $h!t on the way home and she told me no. Good girl! Baby Mak has said an adult word once BUT she used the correct context so I wasn’t sure whether to be proud or upset. It’s really hard to discipline your 3 year-old when she says, “I can’t pick up this f&$king baby!” For the record, she already had 3 babies in her hands. It was really difficult not to laugh.
Moral of the story:
We expose our children to a lot, both good and bad. Our girls had to listen to some jackass rant in the airport because he missed his flight. They heard their fair share of expletives that day but they knew not to repeat them. As much as you try, you cannot shelter them from everything. My goal is to arm them with knowledge and trust them to make the right decisions. So relax. Crossfit is not going to ruin your children. Swinging from the gymnastics rings is a right of passage and it’s just plain fun. Don’t keep them from that 🙂
