So you’re cleared to exercise again. Great! Now how do you workout with a baby that requires so much of your attention? It is a balancing act but completely possible. If excuses are what you’re looking for, you will find them. If results are what you’re after, you’ll find a way to make it work. I have been doing this balancing act for years!
The easiest way to workout with a baby is to enlist the help of your partner. If you have a crossfit membership (perhaps at Crossfit West Springfield – shameless plug), this can be as easy as trading off the child(ren). You workout one hour and then switch! Happy, healthy moms and dads equal happy, healthy children. If your partner isn’t available, this is where you have to get creative.
Working out from home is my go-to when I don’t feel like dragging my kids around with me. The girls can ride their bikes while the boy sits in his jogger. He is more than happy to be an onlooker and if my workout contains jumping rope, he’s over the moon. 8-month-olds are very easily entertained!
My home gym must haves in order of importance for me are:
1 – A good jumprope
2 – Dumbbells, even if its only one (craigslist is your friend)
3 – Wallball
4 – Pullup bar
5 – Barbell with minimal weights
My general rule of thumb for home workouts comes from “Programming 101” during my Crossfit Level 1 certification. I combine one push movement, one pull movement and one aerobic movement. And poof. There perfect workout.
If you don’t have access to any equipment at home, your bodyweight is all you need.
12 min AMRAP
9 Jumping Squats
7 Push ups
9 Walking Lunges
The google machine is your friend. Get resourceful. There are so many travel WoDs available at your fingertips. If you want it bad enough, you will make it happen. Nothing beats the crossfit community but some days, you take what you can get. And just remember, when you can’t fit it all in, it’s not the end of the world. Your babes will only be little for so long.
